Selective Trust
Much of the conversation around AI is framed as belief or disbelief. Both positions misunderstand the nature of the tool.
The mistake is treating AI as an authority rather than a mechanism. Trust becomes misplaced when subjective questions are framed as objective ones, or when outputs are interpreted as absolute rather than aggregated.
Selective trust begins with recognising limitations. AI does not replace judgment, but it expands access to structured information. When a question can be answered through synthesis — drawing from patterns, common practice or broadly available data — its responses can exceed the perspective of any single individual. The value lies in breadth rather than certainty.
The boundary appears where interpretation replaces synthesis. Opinion, taste and contextual trade-offs remain domains where human judgment carries greater weight. Bias does not disappear through aggregation, and questions that require qualitative positioning cannot be resolved through scale alone.
A further limitation emerges through translation. The usefulness of an output depends on how clearly a problem is framed. Weak input produces weak structure, not because the system lacks intelligence, but because the question has not been stabilised.
Adopting selective trust shifts the role of AI from answer provider to structural partner. It becomes a way to compress research, surface viable directions and remove unnecessary cognitive load, while leaving final interpretation intact.
The result is not increased certainty, but better alignment between task and capability — using AI where synthesis provides leverage and withholding reliance where judgment defines value.
